Tulsa Gets a New Library
Tulsa has a new library with a home around the LaFortune Park area. Dubbed the Herman and Kate Kaiser Library, the much-needed south Tulsa location was 100 percent donor-funded. Families are invited to the ribbon cutting on August 6th and encouraged to tour the new facilities. Refreshments will be provided by the Tulsa Library Trust.
The opening will feature a performance by Steel Around, a Tulsa-based steel drum band that will provide Caribbean-themed music, including songs from Harry Belafonte, Jimmy Buffett and Bob Marley. The festivities begin at 10 a.m.
The 10,000-square-foot library has a shelving capacity for 50,000 books and features tall ceilings and windows that allow patrons to take in unique views of the LaFortune Park setting and pond.
Other features include:
- Magical dragonflies and electric ladybugs welcoming the youngest readers to an imaginative children’s area.
- A meeting room with seating for 75 people for area community groups and library programs.
- Teen area with computer-equipped retro-style seating.
- Sculpture garden featuring artwork of characters from children’s stories like “On the Road With Mother Goose” by Diane Mason, as well as a large bronze sculpture of a child reading a book while relaxing on a large rabbit, created by Georgia Gerber.
- Busts of Herman and Kate Kaiser, created by local artist Rosalind Cook
- Reading lounge areas near windows that create niches for enjoying the outdoors
